True North Flight was born out of a love for aviation and a determination to provide a better training experience for those who want to learn to fly to their adventures.

True North Flight is based at 41U (Manti-Ephraim) in central Utah. This is an ideal location in which to conduct training. Uncongested airspace, abundance of backcountry opportunities all around and class D and B airspace reasonably available for that training experience as well.

Primary flight instruction is usually conducted in a Cessna 172.
Tailwheel instruction can be conducted in the customer plane at the current time. High performance endorsement is conducted in a Cessna 182.

Safety is the main focus in every phase of instruction because that’s how we get to be “Old Pilots”. Developing solid stick & rudder skills and thoroughly knowing the flight characteristics and performance capabilities of our aircraft is how we expand our adventure opportunities to safely share with family and friends.

Your Flight Instructor: Tom Herbert

Tom started flying at the age of 17 in St. George, Utah exploring some of the most beautiful canyons, mountains and deserts in the world. After 40 years of flying decided it was time to step up the game in aviation skills and ratings. Working through the Instrument rating generated the drive to attain a Commercial rating and then Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).  All this training lead to where the dreams truly lie, flying in the back country and teaching others how to safely enjoy this amazing experience. Having flown the majority of flight hours in support of business travel simply exposed vast areas of the mountainous western U.S. that needed to be explored.

The process of obtaining flight training and ratings through several different flight schools provided proof that the quality of flight training varies greatly and there is a need for flight schools that focus on the student not just the process and Instructors that instruct for the love of aviation and not just to further their career.
